It is great to be home!
The final day in Buenos Aires was sunny and a bit cool. The medical students took us for that last bit of shopping and we had lunch with them. They really know how to make pizza in Argentina! We had pizza several times and it was always good. Not something I imagined ahead of time. It is a long flight from Buenos Aires to Florida. I reflected on the last three weeks and it seemed to have flown by. I do plan to return to Argentina in the future. It is a vast country and there is still more to see. Now it is time to follow up on ideas and contacts.
My journey comes to an end and an update on some Acquire Art artists
Buenos Aires is wonderful. It is a city of art, music, dance (not just tango), crafts, food and fun. There are many sites, smells and sounds to engage you as you walk the not so even streets peering in pastry shops located on almost every corner. There are fruit stands and flower stands sprinkled between restaurants, boutiques and homes. It is a such a large city we have barely touched the surface of all there is to see in the few days we have been here.
One final La Rioja event and then 9/25 on to Buenos Aires
Argentineans eat small breakfasts. Coffee, media-luna (small croissant shaped sweet), bread, jam and fruit. Nothing like a "typical" American breakfast. My last morning in La Rioja I decided to break ranks and go for a ham and cheese omlette. Since Argentineans eat eggs almost any other time than breakfast what arrived was a huge portion of scrambled eggs with ham and cheese. While we were eating a young boy of about 8 came into the restaurant to beg. This is not unusual there. We had just finished paying the bill.
Ciao to La Rioja............very mixed emotions
Dr. Vega and the children of the barrio San Vincente are amazing. Dr. Vega works tirelessly against all odds to provide the best healthcare possible for the people of San Vincente. His warm smile usually accompanied by a funny saying or story are charming. His creativity is challenged by days without supplies such as needles for injections (it took three days to get them) and only one blood pressure cuff for the entire clinic. He does it all with a smile. When you walk with him down the streets of La Rioja the children especially run up to say "hola" to Dr.
Things don't always go as planned....20 hours of dust storm
It started last night and the winds howled around and through the apartment where I am staying in La Rioja. La Rioja had a major earthquake in the 1970's so there are very few highrises. My building at 9 stories is one of the taller buildings. The winds reminded me of my experience with hurricanes in Florida. The apartment actually has shutters similar to hurricane shutters for those of you from Florida that are familiar with them. They seal the windows, which is why it was such a surprise that dust covered the inside of the apartment.
September 21.....the beginning of Spring in South America
It's really an adjustment to think of Spring beginning on September 21st. I've watched the flowers blooming and the leaves turning green on the trees since I arrived, but somehow it wasn't Spring to me. It turns out that the first day of Spring is a student and health care worker holiday. Argentine people love to party. Spring and the student holiday are a great excuse for music and dancing that lasts through much of the night. Actually, we have found that Friday and Saturday nights are also great times for music and dancing all night long.....the music seems to stop with the sunrise!
La Rioja continued....the food, the barrio and some art..September 18th
I came to Argentina and it has changed me. I am a better person for this experience. I came thinking I could help. Maybe I can, but Argentina has opened my eyes.
