SUSAN HESS

SUSAN HESS
If one word could describe my painting it would be COLOR! Vibrant, luscious, and bold color is what sparks my creativity. After obtaining a BA degree in fine art and interior design I pursued a career as an interior designer for the past 20 years. During that time the colors of paint and fabrics were my most important keys in creating interiors. Now pursuing my fine art career I have combined my love of color with my other love, “the tropics”. As Jimmy Buffet sings, “All it took was my first look”. After moving to Florida in 1980 and traveling extensively with my husband throughout the Caribbean I was inspired to capture the colorful lifestyle and beauty found in such places as Key West, Florida (one of our favorite spots) and the Caribbean islands.

My favorite subjects are the breathtaking tropical vistas, the luscious fruits and vibrant flowers that are abundant in paradise. Working from sketches or photographs taken while traveling, I paint with watercolor on yupo (a synthetic plastic) using large brushes and broad strokes. This slick surface allows the water and color to flow and mix on the surface creating excitement. This technique allows me to create a bold, spontaneous painting with a life all its own.    I am constantly on the lookout for new materials, techniques or ideas that will enhance the painting and I have been fortunate to study and learn from professional artists including Nita Engle, Mary Ann Beckwith, Gerald Brommer, Ed Minchin, Pat Deadman, Pat San Soucie, Lana Grow and Edgar Whitney.

My goal is to capture the imagination of the viewer and make them feel like they are on vacation. I want them to hear the steel drums and crave a margarita.
