ESCHWAN WINDING

ESCHWAN WINDING
I strive to create layered luminosity that is appealingly tactile, encouraging views to stroke and caress the paintings, to discover the sensual experience of encaustic.  The fluidity of the encaustic medium is challenging, exhilarating, inspiring and sometimes extremely frustrating, but I love the physical demands of working with wax and I am challenged by its constraints.  In this process oriented technique, I build translucent layers of hot molten bees wax, resin and pigment. Once melted, the encaustic is painted onto a wood surface, then fused or reheated to bond each layer to the previous layer. Then I paint, scrape, incise, add transfers and fuse some more, all to create a surface that expresses emotion, texture and energy. This gives a sense of depth in my paintings that is unique to this medium.
